How to Use Alpines and Heathers in the Garden
Alpines and heathers are fantastic plants to use in your garden rockeries. They are both low maintenance and provide a vibrant colour palette to complement the neutral tones of the rocks.
We have come up with some alternative ideas for how to incorporate these beautiful plants into your outdoor space.
5 Ways to use alpines & heathers in the garden:
Alpine troughs.
These cast stone or resin troughs look fantastic planted with alpines and can be dotted with interesting pebbles or small pieces of rock. Place a layer of grit on the bottom of the trough, fill with gritty soil-based compost, plant and finish off with a decorative layer of grit or gravel.
Patio pots.
Alpines and heathers can be slipped into pots of bedding plants to add more colour with their foliage and flowers. As many alpines trail, they can cascade from the brim adding depth to your pots. As pot plants, Alpines are
also great on their own in-wall planters and pots.
Wall planting.
Some old walls have cavities where you can squeeze an alpine, along with a little compost. This is a fantastic way to give a bland wall an injection of colour.
Rock garden.
For a smaller space, you could have a spiral effect rockery with a build-up of soil and stone. Plant beds of heathers and alpines randomly amongst the stones, leading from the top, spiralling gently down around the bed
to the floor planted with more alpines.
Borders.
Both heathers and alpines, due to their small stature, work well planted along the front of herbaceous and mixed borders and beds.
