Growing Fruit Trees

There is nothing more satisfying than eating apples or pears that have been picked from your own fruit tree. Apple and pear trees are incredibly easy to plant and maintain, and so are most fruit trees, depending on the type of tree you choose they often thrive in medium sized gardens, as well as large spaces.

When to plant your tree

If there is frost we would suggest you should avoid planting your fruit tree, instead it is better to place the roots into moist soil and wait to plant once the conditions improve. The ideal time to plant bare-root trees is late autumn to early winter, while container-grown trees can be planted at any time of year but ideally, avoid planting in soil that is too dry or too wet.

Planting the tree

Make sure you have soaked the roots before you plant the tree. Choose a spot that is in a sunny and sheltered location to plant your fruit tree in, as this will help to maximise the time your fruit has to ripen.

If you’re planting a bare-root tree dig a hole a third wider than the roots and to the same depth as the roots. Press down the soil at the bottom of the hole to firm into a slight mound and insert the stake and your tree. Fill in with soil and mound towards the base of the tree attaching it to the stake.

For trees that are being planted in a container, fill half the container with soil-based potting compost and place the tree on top. Fill the container with more soil right up to the base of the tree. Ensure you water and feed container-based trees regularly.

Keeping trees pest free

You will need to protect your fruit trees from pests that will destroy the fruit and leaves. Grease bands can be used to protect against moths, while pest control spray can be used throughout the year to keep pests away.
