Celebrate National Houseplant Day: Care Tips for Your Indoor Garden

Houseplants bring life, colour, and calm to your home — especially during the shorter days of winter. To celebrate National Houseplant Week, we’ve pulled together tips for keeping some of the most popular indoor plants happy and healthy.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is low-maintenance. Place it in bright light and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can harm this succulent, so stick to a light watering routine.

Areca Palm

Areca palms thrive in bright, indirect light and need consistent moisture. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, and wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust and encourage healthy growth.

Philodendron

Philodendrons are adaptable and tolerant of lower light, though they prefer bright, indirect light. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, and keep them in a spot with good air circulation.

Monstera (Monkey Mask)

Monsteras love bright, indirect light and benefit from occasional watering when the top inch of soil is dry. They enjoy high humidity and occasional fertiliser during the growing season.

Alocasia (Elephant Ear)

Alocasias enjoy bright, indirect light and slightly moist soil. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and avoid cold drafts. These tropical beauties also benefit from occasional fertilising during the growing season.

Maranta (Prayer Plant)

Prayer plants are famous for their folding leaves at night. They prefer bright, indirect light and consistently moist soil. Mist regularly and avoid letting water sit in the leaf axils to prevent rot.
