Gardening Jobs for March!

Gardening Jobs for March!

In March, the garden begins to wake up, bursting with early colour and new growth. It’s a key moment for both sowing and planting, with longer, warmer days opening the door to plenty of outdoor jobs. Once the last frosts are behind us, many flowers and vegetables can be started directly in the soil.

Flowers 🌼

Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with slow-release fertiliser by lightly forking it into the soil surface.

Finish cutting back dead foliage from perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth.

Continue to deadhead winter pansies to stop them from setting seed. This encourages new flowers throughout the spring.

Deadhead daffodils as the flowers finish, then let the foliage die back naturally.

Garden Maintenance 🌿

Boost the lawn with proper aeration and feed to encourage healthy grass growth.

Remove perennial weeds by forking up emerging shoots.

Cut back winter-flowering jasmine to encourage future blooms.

Tidy up perennials and ornamental grasses to smarten up the look of flower beds and borders.

Prune and feed rose bushes.

Greenhouse 🌱

Start sowing tender vegetables and flowers indoors using sunny windowsills to ensure an early start.

Check overwintering plants for pests such as aphids and remove any dead leaves to prevent disease.

Ventilate greenhouses on warmer days to prevent excessive humidity and fungal issues.

Clean greenhouse glass to maximise light levels, helping young plants grow strong and healthy.

Fruit and Vegetables 🍎

Start sowing hardy vegetables like carrots, onions, parsnips and spinach outdoors, ensuring the soil is not too wet or frozen.

Start sowing tomatoes, peppers and aubergines indoors in seed trays or small pots to give them a strong start before transplanting later in the season.

Start chitting seed potatoes by placing them in a bright, frost-free location, allowing them to develop strong sprouts before planting.

House plants 🌵

Now is the perfect time to refresh your houseplants by repotting them, giving them room to grow as the days get longer.

Begin to water more frequently as the temperature begins to rise, and as plants begin to grow, they will require more water.

Start to feed more regularly to support new growth.

Clean leaves by dusting, cleaning or wiping with a damp cloth to remove dust.
