Gardening Jobs for September

Gardening Jobs for September

September is an important month for gardeners. As summer comes to an end and autumn begins, there are plenty of jobs to tackle to keep your garden looking tidy, healthy and ready for the colder months.

Whether you have a small garden, a large lawn or several outdoor areas to maintain, September is the perfect time to give your garden some attention.

1. Tidy Up Borders and Flowerbeds

Start by removing weeds, dead plants and any damaged foliage from your borders and flowerbeds. Clearing away unwanted growth helps keep your garden looking neat and reduces places where pests and diseases can develop. It’s also a good time to cut back some summer plants and prepare your borders for autumn and winter.

2. Give Your Lawn Some Attention

After a very dry summer, lawns can often look tired or patchy. September is an excellent time to repair bare patches, remove moss and give the grass a good feed.

Regular mowing is still important while the grass continues to grow, although you can gradually raise the cutting height as temperatures become cooler.

3. Trim Hedges and Shrubs

Overgrown hedges and shrubs can quickly make a garden look untidy. September is a good opportunity to trim them back and maintain their shape.

Removing dead, damaged or unwanted branches can also encourage healthier growth and improve the overall appearance of your garden.

4. Plant for Next Year

September is a great month for planting. Many spring-flowering bulbs can be planted now, giving them plenty of time to establish before winter.

Planning ahead in September can reward you with a colourful and healthy garden when spring arrives. Essential spring flowering bulbs you can plant in your garden include tulips, daffodils, crocuses and hyacinths.
