Jobs for June in the Garden

Get set for summer with these essential tasks

June is a glorious month in the garden – long, warm days and everything in full bloom. But while the borders burst with colour and veg beds fill out, there’s still plenty to do to keep things thriving. Whether you're growing your own or just love a beautiful outdoor space, here are your key gardening jobs for June:

Deadhead for more blooms

Regularly snip off faded flowers from bedding plants, roses, and perennials like lupins and delphiniums. It keeps displays looking neat and encourages the plant to produce more blooms all summer long.

Sow and grow

It’s not too late to sow salad crops like lettuce, radish, rocket, and spring onions – ideal for picking fresh for the BBQ! Keep sowing carrots and beetroot every few weeks for a steady supply.

Feed hungry plants

June is peak growth time, and your plants need energy! Feed flowering plants, veg, and containers every week with a high-potash fertiliser to support growth and boost blooms and fruit.

Water wisely

Dry spells are common in June, so water early or late in the day to reduce evaporation. Focus on new plants, containers, and anything growing in the greenhouse. A mulch of bark or compost helps retain moisture too.

Protect your fruit

Cover strawberries, cherries, and currants with netting to keep the birds off, and raise fruit off the ground with straw or mats to prevent rot. Pick strawberries as they ripen and enjoy the taste of summer!

Tidy up and trim

Give hedges a light trim to keep them neat, and cut back spring-flowering shrubs like forsythia once they’ve finished blooming. It’ll help them put on strong new growth for next year.

Check your containers

Container displays are in full swing now. Make sure they're well-watered, fed, and looking their best. If anything is past its best, swap it out for something fresh from our centre!

Keep pests at bay

Watch for aphids, slugs, and snails – especially around young veg and tender annuals. Use environmentally friendly deterrents, companion planting, or natural predators where you can.

With July around the corner, it’s a great time to clean garden furniture, top up bird baths, and stock up on BBQ supplies. And if you're planning a garden makeover, now's the time to plant up beds, borders, or pots while the soil is warm and workable.
