Radish Sparkler 3, is one of the more well-known types and grows into a striking bright red with a white tip. The clear white flesh has a crisp, crunchy texture with a mild peppery flavour. These are a great addition to salads or used in stir fries. As a companion plant, try growing mint near radishes to deter flea beetles.

Root vegetables boast a host of colours and flavours and include carrots, radish, horseradish, sweet potato, turnip and beetroot. Their low rate of metabolism allows for a relatively long postharvest life. Thanks to their high water content, they are key ingredients for a low fat diet. This wholefood is well suited for all cooking options: grilling, mashing, roasting, frying and even in soups. Don't skimp on sunshine when growing them!
