Autumn tidy

Autumn is the time of year where people start to tidy up their gardens ready for winter, this includes getting rid of fallen leaves and repairing garden buildings such as sheds.

We have listed some simple jobs that will help keep your garden looking it’s best during the colder months.

Get leaf picking: Collect autumn leaves that are on your lawn and pathways to keep your garden looking tidy. You could make leaf mould with what you have collected, this is a great soil improver, or help the wildlife during winter by making a shelter of leaves in the corner of your garden out of the way.

Tidy those borders: Go around your garden and remove any dead leaves and collapsed stems. Get rid of weeds and spread compost over the soil to insulate plant roots ready for the winter.

Having a trim: Set your lawnmower blades higher than usual so the grass is slightly longer over winter and mow your lawn for the last time. Trim lawn edging, this makes a huge difference in your lawn’s appearance.

Scoop it out: Scoop out any leaves that have fallen into your pond before they sink down and start to rot. Remove any pumps or fountains that you are no longer using throughout winter and clean them thoroughly.

Grab the hammer and screws: Now is the time to start repairing any broken sheds, raised beds, greenhouses and compost bins before winter kicks in and it becomes too cold and frosty to fix anything.

Scrub scrub scrub: Take down any bird feeders and give them a good clean, also do the same to any vacant nest boxes, empty and clean any birdbaths and make sure you keep water and food topped up throughout the winter.

Protect your hands: During autumn there is a lot of hands-on jobs so make sure you have a good pair of gardening gloves as well as a decent hand wash and moisturiser.
