A garden will look beautiful when it’s covered in sunlight, however, the hot and dry conditions can be very harmful to your plants and flowers which require water. Dehydration was a common during the summer and it’s no exception for your garden. The garden is normally the perfect place to spend your summer as you can sit and relax, and enjoy the weather. But before you start enjoying the weather, your garden is calling out for a bit of care. We’ve listed out top tips to help you during the summer weather to make sure your garden is looking nice and keeping it healthy.

Make Sure Your Plants Are In The Shade

If you have delicate plants in your garden, move them into the shade. This can be done by using large trees or shade from your house in order to protect them from the scorching sun. You should plant them close to each other so they are essentially huddled together. This should be done with care, if there isn’t enough space between the plants and flowers they aren’t able to keep growing. If you have any shade netting, definitely use this to keep them cool.

Take Care Of The Weeds

Weeds can attract pests, diseases and infections which would make your plants more vulnerable during the summer. By weeding out your garden you can increase the chances of your plants surviving during the heatwave. Do this as soon as you see any weeds appearing, the quicker you do it the easier it is to get rid of them. Should you not catch it and get rid of it in time, you can remove weeds by cutting off the top leaves, with only the stump remaining. There is a chance you would have to repeat this process a few times till the root taps get exhausted, afterwards you’ll be able to compost the weeds as the heat in the compost bin would destroy the seeds naturally.

Use Mulch

We highly recommend putting a layer of bark or compost mulch down throughout your borders, this will provide a damp layer of insulation that will lock in all that needed moisture your garden is craving. Make sure you cover any surface roots, this will prevent them from burning. Be extra generous around the vegetables in your garden as they require a lot of water.

Water The Right Plants

Any plats that are recently established will need the largest amount of water to help them grow, however, plants that have been established for a while can be self-sufficient throughout a heatwave but only for a few days without a large amount of water. When you do water your plants, it needs to be done at the right time! If you’re able to do it in the morning before the heat kicks in, do so, if not try and do it in the late afternoon before the evening. If you do it during the day when it’s the hottest you could run the risk of scalding your plants.
