May – Monthly Plant Information

April 15, 2015 by Cherry Lane

General Tasks

With the weather warming up keep on top of hoeing weeds in beds and borders.
Paint or spray greenhouse glass with shade paint to prevent it getting too hot in the summer.
Risk of frost should be over later this month so time to start thinking about bedding plants that will be readily available now.
Continue to plant up tubs and baskets with bedding and basket plants for a riot of colour in the summer.

Trees and Shrubs

Prune back some of the old flowering wood on spring flowering shrubs such as Forsythias, and Ribes to encourage new growth.

Bulbs and Perennials

Feed bulbs to help them prepare for next year’s flowers

Vegetable Garden

Continue to plant tomatoes into your greenhouse if you didn’t do it the previous month.
Peppers and Cucumbers can also be planted into pots or growbags during this month in greenhouses.

Lawns

Cut the lawn regularly and gradually lower the cutting blades of the mower for shorter grass in the summer.
Carry on treating lawn weeds with a suitable weed killer.

Quick Tips

  • Protect young foliage from slugs with advanced organic slug killer or copper rings or tape around pots
  • Now is a good time to repot, pot-on or top dress houseplants with fresh compost
  • Plant pond perennials in aquatic baskets
